Safe Distance Blasting

A paper produced by researchers from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration in 2001 showed that there are four main categories of work-related accidents with explosions, namely (1) safety and blasting site security; (2) stone fly or flyrock, (3) premature detonation (premature Blasting) and (4) misfre (blasting absent). Cases that occurred in the company is one of the suspected injuries caused by the detonation (explosion safety) and exposed rock blasting results that can be categorized as flyrock (at short distances). This is a situation that makes sense because an interpreter was to be exploded in the area closest to the center of explosion.

This is one example of the need for more in-depth knowledge about Blasting management system (system settings or control blasting) to all those involved in the blasting activities. In an explosion there are many things that must be considered to obtain the results of blasting in accordance with desired by the respective mines. Rocks that were blown up in this case can manifest itself coal and rock cover (overburden and interburden). In the gold mine we have the term waste (garbage) and ore (ore, gold) that must be blown up for easy transport and laundering or purification process mined minerals.

Blasting activities at the mine is one of the activities that are considered high risk has an. But that does not mean those activities can not be controlled. This activity control process can be started from the process of mixing ingredients of explosives, explosives filling process to yield the hole, the process and the process of shooting string up. In this case the important role is to control the firing process. There are some things that need to be done is as follows.

- Design blasting.

This section plays an important role in reducing injuries associated with blasting activities. Adequate blasting design will identify a safe distance; amount of stuffing explosives per hole, or in any blasting; time delay (delay period) is required for each hole explosive or time delays for each row of blasting; and blasting the desired direction. If the explosion was designed in such a way, interpreters and Blasting explosive engineer must be coordination to determine the point where it will be shooting (firing) and the radius of the necessary safe distance. This should be done in order for an interpreter to understand the potential explosive hazards associated with the broken rock blasting and stone fly (flyrock) that may occur.

- Training for interpreters exploded.

This is very important, because these resources play an important role to translate the mining engineer who wants to make blasting design. This is set in the Decree of the Minister, which requires that every interpreter must obtain yield adequate training and the only officer who is appointed by the Head of Mining Engineering is concerned that can do blasting. Interpreting yield of certain mines are not allowed to conduct blasting in the mines other for a mine different characteristic.

- Procedures adequate job.

Working procedures or so-called SOPs (Safe Operating Procedure) is an important role to ensure that all activities related to the explosions carried out safely and always obey the regulations, whether governmental or regulatory rules in the mines in question. This procedure is usually made based on testing a risk (risk assessment) conducted by the mine prior to a work process carried out. These procedures include the security of explosives, the process of filling bulk explosives, explosives string up process, the process of shooting (firing), including a safe distance and clearing the area around the explosion site.

Safe distance in an explosion (safe Blasting parameters) currently do not have a standardized standards, including mines in Australia. In the Decree of the Minister-one, not explained in detail how a safe distance for people from the explosion site. This is caused by each mine has a method of blasting which vary depending on local conditions to be detonated and the detonation of course the desired result. However, does not mean that every interpreter must determine their own explosive safe distance is. Decisions about safety, especially those located a safe distance on a Head of Engineering appointed by the mine company after obtaining approval from the Chief Executive Mine Inspection. In the open mines in Indonesia, a safe distance of almost virtually human have in common is in the range of 500 meters. From which the distance is obtained? Clearly, should the results of risk assessment (testing of risk) that has been done in these mines. Risk assessment is not just talk and held blasting techniques, but should also include examples of comparative results from the mines are either inside or outside the country. Safe distance from the results of this risk assessment should be the reference for the establishment of working procedures within the scope of work in the field of blasting. Although there are several mines that make the standard less than 500 meters; but it is allowed as long as risk assessment was conducted and approved by the Head of Mining Engineering is concerned. Though not close the possibility of violation of safe distance from the explosion, but a competent interpreter should yield will obey the rules and work procedures. Violation of work procedures will be fatal, both for her own self, coworkers or a company where she worked.
